The following has implications on sexual minority rights in Singapore, among other equally important issues such as artistic expression and the lack of consumer participation in regulation.

Our media censorship regime not only stifles creativity, but there are known rules that control the portrayal of LGBT, for instance.

These are the rules that prohibit the positive portrayals of gay and lesbian characters on television. Ask yourselves, why can’t LGBT characters be portrayed to be leading normal happy lives? If that were to happen to any other group in Singapore, would that have been tolerated?

This has social repercussions as they reinforce negative and stereotypical notions of LGBT folks.

The group Arts Engage aims to propose changes to the censorship regime, and make calls for more regulation and participation of the citizenry in media regulation.
